office 2007 :The windows installer service cannot update one or more protected windows

17 Dec

I am trying to install Office 2007 onto a clean install of Windows XP (on a friends eee PC – it is really a sweet little laptop.. anyway), I get the error above about protected files. Here is the solution. (This may have happened because in optimizing XP down, some files were deleted).

1. From Windows install disk goto E:\I386 folder and open open (Double click) on the FP40EXT.CAB file. It should open.

(or – if you do not have the disk, find a working XP computer and go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\40\bin).

2. find fp4autl.dll in the list and copy it (ctrl-c)

3. go to c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin and paste it (ctrl-v)

4. Restart the 2007 office install

Viola! (thanks guys over at http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=627360)

wow! Thanks buddy! This fixed the issue on a Acer Aspire one (a751h) I was working on. Couldn't get the damn thing to install XP to begin with then this crap for office came up :(
I got XP installed with "wintoflash" and all looked good. When I tried to install office it gave me that same error. I went through all of Microsofts suggestions and nothing, no luck :(
but then I find your blog and your solution... and it works! Installed just fine!
Thanks buddy I owe you a free lunch :)

Chalk up another "Thank you, that solved my problem !" response !
Other websites are claiming that the Microsoft Office Clean-up Tool can solve this problem, but that did nothing for me. The problem was a result of the "fp4autl.dll" not existing on my PC. Yet, why does Microsoft hide the cause of this problem in the Event Viewer, rather than, at the very least, writing it to the Log file it creates ?

It's amazing how many of us seem to have exactly the same ridiculous problem installing Office 2007, and even now, in the middle of 2009, Microsoft still hasn't updated the installer.

Is it any wonder Apple users mock us ?
  • Great Work, I'm facing the same problem, and with this solution my problem solved
